Cybercrime cops in Manchester have seized £16M in stolen cryptocurrency after smashing a huge online scam.

Now they’re trying to return the cash to its rightful owners.

It was seized by specialist officers from GMP’s Economic Crime Unit after they swooped on the scammers while they were in Manchester and discovered USB sticks containing huge amounts of Ethereum, the second largest cryptocurrency after BitCoin.

Victims from across the globe had deposited money, including life savings, into what they thought was an online savings and cryptocurrency trading service.

But the scammers running the con waited until huge amounts of money had been invested, before shutting down their website and transferring the cash into their own accounts.
