tudents claimed they were being “scammed into paying for glorified lecture slides” on Wednesday after it was revealed that universities are preparing to keep some teaching online next term.

But a petition is calling for face-to-face teaching to be mandatory, saying university students have been completely ignored during the pandemic.

It said: “Students are being scammed; we are having to pay £9,250 for glorified lecture slides. We demand to receive the product that we are paying for.”

About half of students in England have only been able to return to in-person teaching this week — having been taught online since Christmas. At University College London the campus will be open in September and the majority of students will be expected to attend for face-to-face teaching, but some modules “will be mostly online and others completely online if all learning outcomes can be met this way”, according to information for students.
