Pennsylvania state police say they’re warning the public after a Coalport woman was scammed out of $7,000 on Facebook.

Troopers say the woman called them May 28 to report the theft/fraud.

The woman told troopers that the thief, posing as one of her friends on Facebook, reached out to her on Messenger and told her about a great loan they had received, according to state police.

She explained to troopers that the thief convinced her to contact another person to apply for the loan.

Following the advice of the scammer, she reached out to the other person through Facebook Messenger and was scammed out of $7,000, she told troopers.

“Be advised that scammers will clone a friend’s Facebook profile and then contact you posing as your friend,” troopers warn. “Don’t engage in loans or any other money matter on Facebook or Facebook Messenger unless you are absolutely sure you know who you are dealing with.”
