Arjun Aloysius, one of the main suspects in the Central Bank Treasury Bond scam almost managed to market Mendis Old Arrack with a new label when his W.M. Mendis & Co. Ltd managed to get its licence back from the Excise Department. However, six vigilant Cabinet Ministers brought this to the notice of this week’s Cabinet Meeting and got the licence revoked, thus ending the fraudulent dealer’s attempt to re-enter the lucrative liquor trade.
The Excise Department cancelled the licence in 2018 for evading tax payments exceeding Rs. 1.5 billion but in a surprising move, it was granted permission last week to resume production of Old Arrack.
When the Ministers raised this issue, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa ordered the immediate revocation of the licence issued to restart production of W.M. Mendis Old Arrack, owned by Arjun Aloysius.
The President agreed with Ministers Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, Bandula Gunawardena, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, S.M….
