BBB warns of non-certified tax preparers “ghosting” people

MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Jo-Ann Deal with the Better Business Bureau of Northeast Louisiana joined us in the studio this morning to talk about tax preparers “ghosting” people.

Deal says people will set up shop around tax time and promise large refunds to filers. She says they’re often not certified.

The IRS decided to require all tax preparers to have a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) to hold people accountable. Deal says by law, anyone who prepares or assists with preparing taxes needs to have a valid PTIN.

You can check the BBB’s website for a list of scams reported in your area with their Scam Tracker and you can also get tips on how to avoid tax scams here.
