LEE COUNTY – After over a month’s investigation, Lee County Sheriff Office deputies arrested Maximiliano Fernandez, 28, on Thursday. 

Deputies said Fernandez was using a fraudulent ID from Texas to rent skid-steers from Home Depot, then he would sell the equipment to people all over the state. 

“One of the heavy equipment items actually had a tracker which was on a boat getting ready to get shipped out of the country,” Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said.

Deputies said the machinery was heading to Puerto Rico.

Fernandez would use the fraudulent ID under the name William Hernandez and rent equipment having Home Depot deliver it to locations across Lee County in Estero, Lehigh Acres, and in Fort Myers. 

Sheriff Marceno said the Construction Special Investigation Unit had been investigating Fernandez for over a month.
